Egg Collection Fridays

Egg Collection at Rock Bottom Ranch

Dear enthusiastic egg collectors,

As you may have heard in the news, the U.S. has experienced an elevated level of bird flu, officially known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in 2022.  The first, and currently only, case of HPAI in Colorado for domestic poultry was confirmed in Pitkin County last week.

Rock Bottom Ranch is taking several precautions to keep our avian flocks safe including limiting direct visitor contact, trying to prevent interactions with wild birds, and increasing daily sanitation practices. In an abundance of caution, for now, we are not allowing visitors to be in direct contact with the chickens and have decided to cancel our Egg Collection Fridays for the next few weeks (though visitors may see the chickens from a short distance). We appreciate your understanding and will send refunds for this program.

HPAI is transmitted in wild birds, particularly ducks and geese, and consequently can be passed on to domestic poultry.  It's rare for a human to become infected with the avian virus. No human infections of HPAI, which includes the H5N1 bird flu virus, have ever been reported in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rock Bottom Ranch will continue to be open to the public from 9AM - 4PM on Friday, and you are welcome to come and explore the ranch at your leisure and enjoy our brand new self-guided tour (available at the front desk).

Please visit this USDA website if you are curious to know more about HPAI. Thank you for your understanding!
