ACES Birding by Habitat: Marolt Open Space 9/8/23

Friday, September 8, 2023, 7:30-10:30am
Weather: Mostly sunny
Location: Marolt Open Space, Aspen, CO

The mosaic of habitats at the Marolt Open Space makes it a prime fall birding location. We enjoyed walking throughout the various nooks and open areas, finding a variety of birds in loose mixed flocks or in single species flocks, or simply concentrated around rich food sources. The hummingbirds were abundant in the community garden where flowers, water, and insects can be found. Here, we were also able to study sparrows at close range to see their subtly different field marks and make comparisons. A mystery bird seen at the garden was likely a Western Tanager, but its bill was darker and thinner than usual – we will continue to think about this one! In the lower river bottom area along the Bergman Trail, we found many Warbling Vireos and several warbler species, and White-breasted Nuthatches. Check ACES’ website for more upcoming birding outings!
