Migration Wonders: Where Do Birds Go?

Join Bill Schomker for an evening of gaining a deeper understanding of birds and why so many undergo migrations to and from far flung areas. Points to ponder include why birds migrate (or why some stay put year-round), how they navigate across impressive distances (often at night), the mechanisms that power these extreme feats, and some mind-blowing examples of endurance. An overview of how this topic has been studied and how technologies are powering new discoveries will also help to unravel more mysteries of migration. We’ll look at local examples of Colorado’s migrating birds but also consider a global perspective to appreciate and protect our avian resources.
About the Instructor: For over 20 years Bill Schmoker has been a middle school science teacher in Boulder as well as an instructor for the American Birding Association, National Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy, and Boulder County Nature Association. Bill has embarked on two Arctic Ocean research expeditions as a PolarTREC Teacher and explored Greenland as a National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. A widely published bird/wildlife photographer, author, and public speaker, Bill finds adventure and seeks new knowledge wherever he finds himself, whether gardening in his back yard, on an icebreaker at the North Pole, and everything in between.
