If You Want to Go Far, Go Together: Finding the “We” in Individual Sport

We are capable of so much more than we think we are. Over the last 7 years of running ultramarathons, this is the most valuable lesson I (Jeff Colt) have learned. My big secret weapon — spiritual connection. I can’t do it alone. I have to ask people for help. 100 miles is a long way to run, and while I may take every step, my success is rooted in the support I get from my community. I remind myself of how much each and every one of them believes in me and it helps me find that belief in myself. If running these races has taught me one thing, it’s that we are never alone and it just takes naming that and recognizing these important people to feel their presence. It’s a “we” that are capable of more than we think we are. As the proverb goes, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This proverb took on new meaning for me at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships this past November, where I had the opportunity to represent Team USA and run alongside three teammates. Together, we won the team title for the USA at the highest level on the world stage. Join me as we explore the ideas of why we run, dabble with interconnected consciousness, and even leave with a bit of well-sourced patriotism.
