Winter Explorers | Fur Coats, Feathers, and Snow Caves

Are you ready to enjoy some action-packed winter days at ACES? Become a Winter Explorer and discover a winter wonderland first-hand at the Hallam Lake nature preserve. You will examine animal tracks, build a snow cave, make winter art creations, learn winter survival techniques, and investigate how the natural world copes with this harsh season.
Each day our educators will separate winter explorers into different groups for age-appropriate activities.

Dec 26 – Fur Coats, Feathers, and Snow Caves – Gore-tex is not an option for most Aspen animals in winter. Come and learn how animals stay warm despite the frigid temperatures, and build a snow quinzee!

Register for one or more days – Fun in the snow is the main focus of this series but various winter-world components will make each day unique and interesting for repeat explorers.

WHAT TO BRING: Wear appropriate winter clothing including snow pants and jacket, mittens and hat. Bring extra gloves and hat, bring lunch, snack, and reusable water bottle.

HOW TO GET THERE: Please walk, bike, bus, carpool, or ski to ACES sites whenever possible (yes, you really could cross country ski to ACES when there is enough snow). Parking at all sites is extremely limited and alternate transportation is fun and saves the planet!
