ACES Morning Birding at Hallam Lake 08/26/25

Tuesday, August 26, 2025, 7:30am-10:30am
Weather: Cloudy, cool
Location: Basalt, CO

Thirty-nine species made this a big morning at Hallam Lake! We found loads of birds in the scruffy forest and shrubs along the Post Office Trail, with many warblers, pygmy nuthatches, chickadees, and pewees. Lewis’s woodpeckers were a constant presence throughout the morning, most likely the family that nested in the vicinity. In the preserve, an osprey sat with half of a fish in its talons, resting between feeding bouts. A northern mockingbird surprised us; while this bird is found in Colorado, it is unusual at the elevation of Aspen. Steller’s jays flitted overhead, a kingfisher chattered, and waxwings moved from treetop to treetop as they sallied out to fly-catch insects. Downy woodpeckers flew in close for excellent views, followed by a hairy woodpecker for a great comparison of proportions and markings on outer tail feathers. In the back of the preserve, we heard the scratchy call notes of a northern waterthrush several times at close range, but the elusive bird did not come into view. We enjoyed great looks at a Virginia’s warbler, creepers, and many hummingbirds. Other highlights included the two species of teals on the lake, which we were able to see in flight and on the water. The activity of fall dispersal and migration continues to be super fun! Join us tomorrow for more birding at North Star Nature Preserve!
