The osprey household was calm and peaceful this morning as we watched the adults switch duty at the nest. There were brief periods when both adults were away from the nest, indicating that the chick(s) are growing and more capable of thermoregulation. We look forward to seeing the development of this family over the next month. Heron nests were bursting with hungry chicks that begged loudly any time a parent came to feed them. Sandpipers were especially active and vocal this morning; we expect to see chicks any day! At the bridge over the Roaring Fork River, we watched food deliveries by parents at the dipper nest and pygmy nuthatches at their nesting cavity in a tree along the river. Hummingbirds were gathering spider webs from the bridge supports for nesting material. Join us tomorrow to explore birds in the burn area on Basalt Mountain!
