ACES Morning Birding at Rock Bottom Ranch 7/18/23

Monday, July 18, 2023, 7-10am
Weather: Sunny
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch, Basalt, CO

Birds were very vocal and active today, many remaining hidden in foliage or otherwise difficult to see well, but we did have some excellent sightings: several Black-headed Grosbeaks, a Cooper’s Hawk, Lewis’s Woodpeckers, Yellow Warblers, and a few flycatcher species. Families of Lewis’s Woodpeckers, Say’s Phoebes, Yellow Warblers, House Wrens, Red-winged Blackbirds, Magpies, and Crows interacted around us, providing opportunities to watch begging behavior and fledglings’ attempts to forage for themselves. We saw Cedar Waxwings gathering and flying with nesting material as they begin their mid-summer breeding cycle, timed to coincide with the ripening of berries and other fruits. Catbirds and House Wrens were the most abundant species today. Many birds today were heard only. Join us next Tuesday for Morning Birding at Hallam Lake!
