ACES Morning Birding at Rock Bottom Ranch 8/20/24

Tuesday, August 20, 2024, 7:30-10:30am
Weather: Mostly sunny
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch, Basalt, CO

Fall is in the air! It was a little crisp this morning, and then it warmed up as the sun came over Basalt Mountain. Bird activity was on the low side, but we found pockets of activity and enjoyed some exciting views of birds. Highlights included a flock of wild turkeys in a distant pasture, an abundance of western wood-pewees and cedar waxwings, and Wilson’s and yellow warblers foraging in the willows. Another exciting moment was watching as a sora emerged from the cattails to walk out into the open on the aquatic plants just beneath the surface of the pond. While we watched the sora, a Virginia rail vocalized from within the cattails, giving its distinctive grunt calls. Join us on field trips throughout September for more fall migration birding!
