Comments:
This class focused on birding in various major habitats of the mid valley including oak shrubland, sagebrush shrubland, pinyon-juniper woodland, agricultural fields and pastures, cottonwood riparian, cattail marsh, wetland/pond, reservoir/open water, mixed shrubland, mixed forest, and aspen forest. Highlights of the day were observing a female black-chinned hummingbird on her nest and preening in branches above it, a flock of more than twenty Clark’s Nutcrackers, Lewis’s Woodpeckers and their noisy brood in a nest cavity, Trumpeter Swans, and many opportunities to enhance skills at birding by ear. Forty-nine species were seen during this class. The next class in this series focuses on the Aspen and Snowmass Village vicinity, and will include a visit to a large heronry at a private residence and a visit to Ziegler Reservoir with guest Tom Cardamone to explore past, present, and future bird habitats as revealed through the Snowmastadon Dig,
