Weather: Sunny
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch, Basalt, CO
Evening at Rock Bottom Ranch are magical, with a bout of activity as birds feed to fill their crops before roosting for the night. We had many special observations, including a female violet-green swallow that sat in the opening of a knothole in a cottonwood tree for many minutes, giving us a chance to see her extra large eyes, tiny bill, and other adaptations for an aerial, insectivore lifestyle. We also enjoyed seeing many babies: recently fledged magpies, goslings, ducklings, and red-winged blackbirds. We discussed nesting season and some of the specialĀ life history information about the birds we were observing. Other highlights included a very brief view of a bald eagle in the vicinity of the active nest and many yellow warblers in the alders and willows around Cole Island. Join us next Tuesday for Morning Birding at Rock Bottom Ranch!
