Evening Birding at Rock Bottom Ranch, 6/8/22

Evening is a wonderful time to watch birds, when the day-active birds have a bout of heightened activity before roosting for the night. We began with a few very vocal wrens and Yellow Warblers near the parking lot and birded our way from there along the trails and farm pathways on the property. We noticed nesting activities, such as robins and Say’s Phoebes nesting on the farm center building, and fledglings including Canada goslings and Killdeer. Lewis’s Woodpeckers and American Kestrels were perching in the cottonwood stand where they have their nesting cavities. A Trumpeter Swan from the local non-migratory population was resting on the lakeshore. Our conversations covered lots of fun life history information about the birds we saw as well as key field marks. Top highlights included the two fledgling Killdeer, a Red-naped Sapsucker at close range, and a Black-headed Grosbeak singing from the scrub oaks. View all upcoming birding outings!
