Comments:
To answer a request by birders, we organized a birding outing to Meadowood Pond, a private property for which we coordinated special access. And it was a fantastic morning with a variety of bird species! An immature red-tailed hawk flew in just before the outing began, and the morning unfolded from there with a pied-billed grebe, coots, and a mallard on the pond, and red-winged blackbirds, pine siskins, and house finches in the surrounding trees. Several song sparrows in fresh plumage foraged among the rushes and in the open for excellent viewing. Special highlights included a common nighthawk seen in flight and a sora that made several short flights as it moved among the rushes. This little gem of habitat is an oasis for both resident and migratory birds. Thanks to Graeme Means and Meadowood HOA for allowing us to bird there. Join us next Tuesday at Rock Bottom Ranch!
