Morning Birding at Hallam Lake 5/3/22

Tuesday, May 3, 2022, 7am-10am
Weather: Partly Cloudy
Location: Hallam Lake

Migratory birds are returning and passing through the valley on a daily basis, and today’s bird activity level reflected that well. We began with evening grosbeaks, red-naped sapsuckers, flickers, and mountain chickadees in the cottonwood forest, and continued on to observe the ospreys changing incubation duty at their nest. We also spent time trying to find warblers singing in the cottonwood canopy, and discovered that they were yellow-rumped warblers (after thinking we could have had a migrating black-throated gray warbler). Other highlights included discovering a second great blue heron nest being built near the original nest (and a total of 6 adult herons in the nest area!); great, up-close looks at ruby-crowned kinglets and a downy woodpecker; and an active American dipper nest on a bridge over the river. Join us for our next birding outing!
