Weather: Overcast
Location: Hallam Lake Nature Preserve, Aspen, CO
It was a treat to watch birds on this misty morning with low clouds hanging over the mountains! Bird activity was good during this window in this week’s cooler, rainy weather pattern. Many of the birds we saw today were juveniles, either out on their own or attended and being fed by adults. Highlights included watching an adult osprey deliver a fish to the nest platform where the juvenile ate it, fledgling evening grosbeaks being fed by parents in a chokecherry shrub at close range, juvenile herons around Hallam Lake, and yellow warblers in willows along the Roaring Fork River. We discussed early migration, noting that the swallows will be among the first to leave in the next few weeks. We ended with a dipper on the Roaring Fork River; this bird was feeding in shallow, flowing water where it successfully caught and ate one invertebrate after the next. It was a wonderful, bird-filled morning! Please check out our upcoming birding progams!
