Morning Birding at Hallam Lake 9/21/21

The first freeze of the season brought on a clear, chilly morning and birds became more and more active throughout the morning as the sun began to warm foliage and activate insects. Work to repair the earthen berm at Hallam Lake is underway, and skirting the construction area, we birded in most of the parts of the preserve accessed by trails. Highlights today included a red-tailed hawk that perched on a dead snag in excellent light where we could see its field marks well, an osprey that flew over, a kingfisher, many warblers, a late-lingering hummingbird, and pygmy nuthatches. We saw interesting behaviors such as robins feeding on mountain ash berries, warblers fly-catching insects over the river, magpies and crows mobbing the red-tailed hawk, and ducks preening their molting plumage.
