Morning Birding at Hallam Lake Species List

Tuesday, July 13, 2021 7am-10am
Weather: Sunny, wildfire smoke haze
Location: Hallam Lake

Comments:

After a mini lesson on how songbirds perch while sleeping at night (using only a light grip on the branch and an extra sensitive sense of balance), we found pygmy nuthatches and house finches in the cottonwoods above ACES’ driveway. Moving on to the Post Office Trail, we focused scopes on the osprey nest and observed the large chick and attentive parents. The large heron chicks were another highlight; they seem ready to fledge any day. We also observed a flicker and a hairy woodpecker in the same snag, providing an excellent comparison of field marks, silhouette, and size. Cedar waxwings, cordilleran flycatchers, and yellow warblers vocalized all around us, but were difficult to see among the lush foliage.  A mallard hen with eleven ducklings was another fun sighting on the lake. Join us over the next two days for evening and morning hummingbird studies at a special location in the West Buttermilk area!
