Morning Birding at Hallam Lake Species List

Active bird families were busy in the Hallam Lake Preserve this morning: robins, flycatchers, and warblers were seen carrying food in their bills, destined for hungry nestlings.  The osprey pair were on the nest platform together at one point, with one adult pulling at a trout, possibly to feed small bits to hatchlings.  We are anxiously awaiting any hatchlings that may make an appearance above the edge of the nest any day.  An adult great blue heron was standing at its active nest in a spruce tree above the lake, while the other adult in this pair was seen flying through the preserve throughout the morning.  We found that the boardwalk offered the optimal viewing angle for this nest from a distance to give the heron family plenty of space and privacy.  Setting up scopes on the boardwalk, we enjoyed views of three heron chicks as they moved about in the nest!  Fox sparrows sang near the upper pond and near the viewing platform in the back of the preserve.  Flycatchers and kinglets sang and foraged in the cottonwood canopy.  Mallards are in mid-molt as they grow their summer eclipse plumages.  Waxwings, house finches, pine siskins, swallows and song sparrows gave us great opportunities to practice with field marks.  Join us next Tuesday at Rock Bottom Ranch!
