Tanagers and Lewis’s woodpeckers were the stars of today’s outing! We were treated to views of two male western tanagers, one at the beginning of the morning and another at the end. Both were active, but stayed in view and in great light for plenty of time for us to soak in their gorgeous colors and unmistakable field marks. We also enjoyed Lewis’s woodpecker activity throughout the field trip, with both adults and juveniles giving us quite a show! Chickadees were particularly abundant and active in loose flocks. Today’s mini lesson focused on the wild turkey and the nursery flocks that form when a number of females merge their poults together. This is the time of year when turkeys can be seen with their young of the year – always a fun and entertaining sight. Join us on August 4th for a special field trip to Woody Creek and a private property in Lenado!
