This outing began with two young bears climbing into serviceberry bushes on the hillside across from RBR’s driveway. We watched them feeding on berries side by side in the shrubs, with occasional wild thrashing as flimsy branches bent under their shifting weight. While distracted by the cute bears, we also saw a family of black-headed grosbeaks, a kestrel, western tanagers, yellow warblers, and Lewis’s woodpeckers. A stealthy sora gave a whinney call from the thick sedges and cattails right in front of us. Other highlights included an adult and immature bald eagle, a cedar waxwing, an American goldfinch, and a fledgling spotted towhee. The fledged Lewis’s woodpecker family gave us an ongoing show as they flew and perched around our group during much of the morning.
