Morning Birding at Rock Bottom Ranch Species List

Tuesday, May 18, 2021 7am-10am
Weather: Mostly sunny
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch

Comments:

Early spring fledglings are already out of the nest, including the goslings and killdeer chicks that we saw this morning. These ground-nesting birds fledge their young within hours of hatching and they begin to forage for themselves under the watchful care of their parents right away. Other highlights include a Bullock’s oriole that stayed in view in excellent light for a long time, allowing us to enjoy its beautiful orange colors. The oriole seemed to be exploring around sap wells in a weeping willow tree where a red-naped sapsucker was also active. We also had great views of a Lewis’s woodpecker preening in a snag. Yellow warblers seem to be back in force, red-winged blackbirds are building nests, and the snipe are active in the extensive wetland areas. Join us tomorrow for a Birding By Habitat field trip up West Sopris Creek Road!
