Morning Birding at Rock Bottom Ranch Species List

Tuesday, March 16, 2021 8:00AM – 11:00AM
Weather:  Sunny
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch

Comments:

Canada geese are grazing on new grass in meadows and fields, killdeer have arrived and are feeding on mud flats and shallow shorelines, and red-winged blackbirds are occupying territories and singing to establish them.  Spring is here, and today was perfect timing to observe lots of feeding activity as birds become more active during a break between bouts of winter weather.  Highlights included seeing two Lewis’s woodpeckers in their traditional stand of trees, finding snipe in three different spots, seeing both golden and bald eagles, and hearing the steady rise in the morning chorus.  We also enjoyed seeing an abundance of mammals:  elk, mink, coyote, and muskrat.  The morning was brisk, the air smelled earthy, and spirits were high as we explored some areas off the beaten path.  Join us in April for Morning Birding at Hallam Lake and at Rock Bottom Ranch!
