Exciting bird migration activity continues!  Flycatchers and swallows seem to have moved on from the mid-valley at this point, but warblers abound.  We saw five different warbler species today, with Wilson’s and yellow-rumped being the most abundant.  Woodhouse’s scrub-jays were carrying acorns and other food items in their bills as they made regular trips across the property between the shrublands and cottonwood forest.  Lewis’s woodpeckers were also observed carrying food items.  Both of these species are food cachers, creating stores that will later supply them during leaner times.  A sora that was actively feeding on the bird blind pond was a fun highlight today, providing us with a great look at the field marks and behaviors of this species that is known for being difficult to see in its densely vegetated habitat.  Join us on Thursday for a field trip to Lake Christine and Basalt River Park!
