Morning Birding Species List | July 8, 2014

Tuesday, July 1, 2014, 6:30AM – 9:30AM
Weather:  mostly sunny
Location: Hallam Lake and Stein Park, Rio Grande Trail

Species Identified
Mallard
Broad-tailed Hummingbird
Northern Flicker (pictured above)
Cordilleran Flycatcher
Black-billed Magpie
American Crow
Violet-green Swallow
      Black-capped Chickadee
House Wren
American Dipper
American Robin
Yellow Warbler
Song Sparrow

Comments: Highlights of this outing were the American dipper observed on the Roaring Fork River, actively foraging for aquatic macro-invertebrates, and the great looks we had of song sparrows, with heads thrown back, belting out their melodious songs.  Singing has taken a nose-dive, as fledglings leave nests and breeding activity starts to wrap up for the season.

In the coming weeks, we expect to see more juveniles on the wing, and feeding interactions between parents and fledglings as these amateurs gain vital skills for self-sufficiency.
