Around the Ranch
This week we hosted one of the most exciting events of the year at Rock Bottom Ranch – the first ever Family Farm Feast with Savour the Mountains and the Oppenheim family. This event was a celebration of local food, healthy eating, and family. We searched the Roaring Fork and North Fork Valleys for the best local food products to bring together for an evening focused on teaching the whole family about where our food come from.
Savour the Mountains is an upcoming cookbook from Ilona Oppenheim, an ACES supporter and local foods advocate. Her cookbook explores preparing meals with raw, local products in simple, and absolutely delicious, combinations.
In addition to a farm tour where we introduced all of the livestock and explored the vegetable production at Rock Bottom Ranch, kids (as well as adults) were able to press fresh apple cider, make butter and whipped cream, mill whole grains (for the pizza dough), and assemble grilled pizzas. Guests enjoyed a family-style meal featuring RBR-grown meat and vegetables followed by Palisade peach bread pudding and hand-churned frozen custard. The evening wrapped up with a bonfire and storytelling on Cole Island, led by our multi-talented Education Director, Arin Trook.
We already have a spot reserved in the RBR library for the highly anticipated release of the Savour the Mountains cookbook. The Family Farm Feast was an incredible evening and we look forward to more celebrations of local food and community.
