Around the Ranch
We are excited to announce that tomato season at Rock Bottom Ranch is just around the corner! In fact, Fourth of July marked the first ripe Sungold cherry tomato of the season (which mysteriously ended up in my mouth).

The past couple weeks have been tomato-filled, just trying to keep up with rapid growth by pruning and trellising the plants. By limiting foliage growth (pruning), we hope to encourage the plant to produce more fruit as well as make harvesting easier. We trellis our tomatoes to give the stems much needed support as their heavy fruits develop, as well as to keep them growing upwards (and not sideways into our walking path).

Here at Rock Bottom Ranch we start our tomatoes from seed in three different successions. We planted our first seeds in late March, and transplanted those starts to our hoophouse starting in May. Those tomatoes took off as soon as they got some room, and they have already reached the top of our four-foot-tall trellis. Click here to read more about our transplant systems.

We have planted tomatoes in both hoophouses, and in the fields, and are hoping for a great tomato harvest starting next week!
