Know Your Trees | Tree Identification Walk

Advance registration is required.

Know Your Trees will be offered Monday, June 19 through Monday, August 28, 2023. There will be no class on Monday, July 3th.

Firs and spruces, aspens and cottonwoods… how many trees do you know? Come explore the ACES backyard with us and discover up to a dozen species of conifers and deciduous trees. And let’s not forget about the great variety of tall shrubs that are all around us!

Join the Naturalist Program Director Jim Kravitz or the Forest Program Director Adam McCurdy on this hour-long walk around the Hallam Lake neighborhood to identify local trees. Participants will walk away with The Rocky Mountain Tree Finder booklet and basic knowledge about the native trees that grow in our neighborhood.

About the Instructors:

Adam McCurdy first joined ACES in 2008 as a Naturalist and re-joined the ACES staff in 2017 as the Forest Programs Director. He received his B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts and his M.A. in Geography from the University of Colorado. Adam discovered the beauties and intricacies of the natural world while exploring the rich forest of New England. As the Forest Programs director he’s thrilled to be spending his time working for the forest of the Rocky Mountains. Adam spends his free time hiking, biking, skiing and whenever possible exploring new places.

Jim Kravitz has been Director of Naturalist Programs since 1996. Jim joined the ACES staff as a Summer Naturalist in 1995 and as a Winter Naturalist in 1995/96. He received his B.A. in Environmental Conservation at the University of Colorado and spent several years guiding backcountry trips throughout the northwestern United States and Alaska. Jim hires for and manages ACES’ Summer and Winter Naturalist Programs. He has completed the American Leadership Forum program as well as graduate work with the Union Institute relating to the importance nature centers play in building social capital within their communities. When not teaching his sons, Jack and Jesse, about the place he lives, Jim likes to hike, ski, and see live music.
