We often use our brooder in the fall for laying chicks or in the late winter for broiler chicks, so it’s critical that it’s insulated, draft free and warm.
It’s really important to have a warm and draft free environment for your baby chicks. We have 3 brooder bays that have insulation on all the walls, and polycarbonate on the roof to let light in. Each bay is 6 by 5.5 feet. Chicks like it to be about 95 degrees for their first week of life. We use the Kalglo electric heater. We love that it heats the ground and chicks, not the air. We unload chicks into one bay, and as they get bigger and need more space, we expand them into the second and then third bay through these small trap doors. We don’t have to move them; they move themselves. In addition, we can swap out the insulated panels in the front for a vented panel to increase airflow. Around 4 weeks of age, the chicks have feathered out and are ready to move out to pasture.
