ACES Morning Birding at Hallam Lake 06/30/26

At the 7:00am arrival time, the temperature was 40 degrees so it felt chilly. Pygmy Nuthatch delighted us as they flew around in the tops of the cottonwood trees while a Northern House Wren sang and sang in the same tree. The nuthatch seem to be very active right before the sun hit the top of the trees and worked its way down. We hiked up the Post Office trail for the view of the Osprey nest. Both parents were on the nest with the female feeding a single chick who now is the size of a rock dove. The only mammal wildlife sighted today, by part of our group, was a newborn fawn. The grounds are filled with baby birds being fed by parents. Bird watching allows one to really observe nature to the fullest. Aspen Center for Environmental Studies gives us the place to do that – Hallam Lake did not have a ripple on it, only breathtaking reflections.
