ACES Morning Birding at Hallam Lake 08/25/2026

The abundance of birds along the Post Office Trail kept us busy for the first hour of our outing – it was exciting! We had repeated experience with a few species that allowed for some great learning of field marks and behaviors: cedar waxwing, pine siskin, western flycatcher, western tanager, and osprey. We particularly enjoyed watching one of the osprey chicks eating a fish with magpies close by, ready to grab any bits that dropped. In the preserve, many warblers, sparrows, catbirds, waxwings, and finches moved about the shrubby hillsides and tree tops, where fruits and seeds are concentrated at this time of year. Our morning wrapped up with a bonus sighting of a small flock of pygmy nuthatches above the driveway as we left Hallam Lake. Join us later this week for birding at North Star Preserve, Jaffee Park Open Space, and Snowmass Village rodeo ponds and wetlands!
