ACES Morning Birding at Hallam Lake 9/10/2024

Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 7:30-10:30am
Weather: mostly sunny
Location: Hallam Lake, Aspen, CO

Many birds were fleeting: evening grosbeaks were heard but not seen, pygmy nuthatches appeared very briefly, and many small songbirds darted among the foliage of the shrubland habitat across the lake. We did, however, get excellent looks at red-naped sapsuckers, eclipse plumaged mallards, and a Cooper’s hawk that flew several laps overhead after interacting with a flock of crows. A solitary sandpiper flew in and stayed just long enough for us to confidently identify it: greenish legs, white eye-ring, white speckling scattered over upper parts, and overall bigger than the spotted sandpipers we’re accustomed to seeing here. Fall migration brings surprises every time we’re out in the field! Join us on Thursday for more great birding at the Moore Open Space!
