Weather: Sunny
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch, Basalt, CO
Nesting season is in full swing, and many of today’s highlights centered around early fledglings and other signs of nesting activities. We saw several mallard and Canada goose families with fledglings of various ages. Waterfowl are some of the earliest local breeding birds to fledge their young. We also saw red-winged blackbirds carrying food to nests to feed hatchlings, starlings carrying nesting material, and Lewis’s woodpeckers going in and out of their nesting cavity. One surprise this morning was a willow flycatcher singing from the willows around the pond at Cole Island, an unusual species not usually seen or heard at Rock Bottom Ranch. Other highlights included a Bullock’s oriole, great observations of yellow warblers, and killdeers actively feeding in the vegetable fields. Join us next week for a special hiking field trip at Seven Castles in the Frying Pan Valley!
