Weather: Mostly sunny
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch, Basalt, CO
Highlights from today’s outing centered around behaviors and practice with field marks as well as songs and calls. We had excellent observations of several adult Killdeer, a great opportunity to learn their name-sayer calls and see them foraging among the rows of lettuce. A pair of Say’s Phoebes is nesting under the carport roof again, making trips to bring food to their nestlings. The Lewis’s Woodpeckers were generally active throughout the ranch and around their nesting tree. We compared their body structure and flight style with that of the flickers that were also very visible. We studied the field marks of three swallow species feeding low over the pond, and caught a too-brief glimpse of a stunningly orange Bullock’s Oriole. Join us on Friday for an outing to the City of Aspen’s Meadows Open Space!
