Morning Birding at Hallam Lake Species List

Tuesday, June 1, 2021 6:30am-9:30am
Weather: Partly sunny
Location: Hallam Lake

Comments:

Most migratory birds are now back in the Aspen area, including recently arrived cordilleran flycatchers and warbling vireos which are some of the later-arriving local species. This morning we enjoyed watching the active osprey nest and great blue heron nest, both with adults sitting tightly to either incubate eggs or brood young hatchlings. No chicks have been spotted in either nest as of yet, but all of us are watching for downy heads any day! Other highlights include seeing many loose flocks of cedar waxwings in excellent morning light, hearing a fox sparrow that was so close but evaded being seen, and great views of a couple of singing male yellow warblers.  We watched flocks of finches moving from treetop to treetop among the cone-laden crowns of spruce trees, mainly siskins and house finches. And we remarked on the fully leafed-out deciduous trees and shrubs that now provide so much foraging for leaf-gleaning birds such as kinglets, warblers, and vireos. We now have to exercise more patience while we watch for birds that move to the outer canopy where we can see them – and it is so relaxing and worth the wait in the serene surroundings of Hallam Lake!  As another highlight along with the birds, we spotted a mother black bear with her tiny cub across the lake where they were likely finding a peaceful spot to sleep for the day. Join us on Friday for a Birding By Habitat trip to part of the Lake Christine Burn area on Basalt Mountain!
