Comments:

Behaviors were special highlights during this outing, with many birds gathering nesting material and others carrying food to nestlings. Chickadees were pulling plant down from willow and cottonwood catkins.  Wrens were pulling shreds of bark from cottonwood trees.  And pine siskins were flying by with materials in their bills.  Another major highlight is the active osprey nest on the new nesting platform above Hallam Lake, where a newly hatched nestling (or possibly more than one!) is nestled under a brooding adult, most likely the female.  The female appears to be lying low in the nest to keep the young bird(s) warm and is, therefore, a bit difficult to see, but we expect to see more of these birds as the nestling(s) grow and become more active.  This is the first active osprey nest at Hallam Lake and the highest nest upvalley, to our knowledge.  Breeding activities are in full swing!  Join us next week on June 9th at Rock Bottom Ranch!
