Morning Birding at Rock Bottom Ranch Species List

Tuesday, June 8, 2021 6:30am-9:30am
Weather: Partly sunny
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch

Comments:

Nesting season is in full swing, with male songbirds singing and defending territories. This provides great opportunities to see these birds as they perch in visible places such as tops of shrubs and trees, and even on fence posts and the windmill! We saw Lewis’s woodpeckers at their active nesting cavity and tree swallows using a nest box.  Highlights included a snipe that foraged in the open for excellent views, a pair of killdeers that were active in the vegetable plots, and a first year male Bullock’s oriole that we were able to watch several times. We also watched mallard ducklings with their mother, feeding among floating aquatic vegetation on the pond. It was an excellent morning for detailed observations of the birds, especially those we watched using the scope.  Join us next Tuesday for Morning Birding at Hallam Lake!
