Naturalist Nights 2015 | Andre Wille
Join local science educator Andre Wille for a multimedia presentation on his summer research experience on the North Slope of Alaska’s Brooks Range. As a part of the National Science Foundation’s PolarTrec program, Wille partnered with a research team interested in the circadian rhythms of arctic ground squirrels. These animals have proven to be remarkable in many ways. Find out how researchers are using technology to unlock the secrets to their survival in this unforgiving environment. Along the way, visit the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and its amazing wildlife. Compare the arctic tundra with our own backyard alpine tundra, and learn how education of the next generation will be key to protecting this climate threatened ecosystem.
Mr. Wille is a veteran science teacher at Aspen High School. Andre teaches all levels of biology, as well as chemistry and integrated science. Andre actively utilizes the “outdoor classroom” to make scientific learning relevant. His students are involved in independent research and citizen science projects near the high school. Andre also leads a variety of outdoor education trips including a week long wilderness backpacking course called “Colorado Peak Experience”. Andre’s research interests include aquatic ecology, adaptation to extreme environments, and ornithology. When not teaching, Andre enjoys time in the outdoors with his wife Julie and daughters Anna and Sara.
