ACES Morning Birding at Hallam Lake 03/04/25

Tuesday, March 4, 2025, 8:00-11:00am
Weather: Partly sunny
Location: Hallam Lake, Aspen, CO

New snowfall overnight freshened up the surface of the snowpack and dusted branches and twigs with snow. Bird activity was high, with a flock of what seemed like hundreds of pine siskins over the ACES visitor center compound. Highlights included a kingfisher perched by the lake for a long time, giving us a chance to study its distinctive field marks, and brown creepers foraging at close range in the cottonwood forest alongside white-breasted nuthatches, for a great comparison of these bark-clinging birds. Birds are beginning to sing and spring is in the air, but there’s more winter ahead – join us for winter birding at Toklat next Tuesday, March 18th!
