Birding at North Star: Songs of Breeding Birds 5/19/23

Wednesday, May 19, 2023, 7:00am-10:00am
Weather: Sunny
Location: North Star Nature Preserve, Aspen, CO

Exploring the western end of North Star, we focused on the songs of spring breeding birds. Species that we studied by listening and watching in the field included Fox Sparrow, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Green-tailed Towhee, and Chipping Sparrow. We discussed songs versus calls as well as drumming by woodpeckers. A pair of Mountain Bluebirds was actively foraging at the edge of a meadow where we enjoyed watching them in excellent light. Other highlights included nesting Tree Swallows and Mountain Chickadees, Gadwalls and Muskrats in the pond, and displaying Red-winged Blackbirds.
